At Romiley Primary School we are determined to do all that we can to achieve 100% attendance. We know that regular attendance is linked to developing skills for life and work. Every half day of absence from school, by law, has to be classified as either authorised or unauthorised. This is why our office team will always ask the reason for your child's absence.
Authorised absences are mornings or afternoons away from school for reasons such as illness, medical appointments and exceptional family circumstances, e.g. bereavement. An absence is classified as Unauthorised if the reason was not recognised as acceptable. The Department for Education and the Local Authority provide information for schools as to what is acceptable and what is not.
What should I do if my child is absent from school?
Please contact the main office on 0161 430 3101 or email office@romiley.stockport.sch.uk on the first morning of any absence by 9:00am. You should tell the school the reason for your child’s absence and indicate when your child is likely to return.
Punctuality
It is important that all children arrive on time to school, The main gates are open from 8:40 am and close at 9.00 am. If you arrive at school after our gates have closed, you will need to bring your child through the main school office entrance and sign them in. If children are regularly late we will invite parents in for a meeting to look how punctuality can be improved.
Promoting attendance and support
We believe that working together with parents is the best way to improve attendance outcomes for our children. We celebrate good attendance during our Friday morning Assembly, where the class with the highest attendance that week receives the 'Fantastic Attendance Cup',
We are happy to work with both children and families to improve attendance and punctuality. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries whatsoever.
Term Time holidays
The government is strengthening the rules around Education Penalty Notices. These are fixed penalty fines which can be issued by the Local Authority where 10 or more sessions (5 days) of unauthorised absence take place.
They are most commonly issued to parents when a child misses school for a term time holiday taken without the permission of the school.
It’s therefore more important than ever that parents arrange to take family holidays in the school holidays and not in term time.
